Lauren James scores wonder strike in her first Women's World Cup start

England now on the brink of qualification for the knockout stages

England beat Denmark 1-0 in a crucial Group D clash at the FIFA Women's World Cup on Friday, with Lauren James scoring a wonder strike in her first start of the tournament.

The Lionesses now need just a point from their final group game against Australia to secure qualification for the knockout stages.

James' goal came in the 20th minute, when she picked up the ball on the left wing and drove into the Denmark penalty area.

She then unleashed a fierce shot into the top corner of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

England controlled the game for large periods, but Denmark had a few chances to equalise in the second half.

However, the Lionesses defence held firm to secure a vital victory.

The win was even more impressive considering that England were without several key players, including Keira Walsh, who suffered a knee injury in the warm-up.

Manager Sarina Wiegman praised her team's performance, saying: "I'm really proud of the players. They showed great character and determination to win the game."

England will now face Australia in their final group game on Tuesday, knowing that a draw will be enough to see them through to the knockout stages.
